Elefant
FilmMusicFashion&Babes enthusiast we bring you the ultimate NYC band. Yes,
the soon to be crowned kings of New York, the one, the only, the killer band,
Elefant. You must all run out and purchase both their albums if you have not
already. Check out the Q&A with Mod + some other words and tour info.
FMFB: With the first release on Kemado, how many units were you able to sell
Elefant: somewhere around 20000
FMFB: That's pretty impressive being that Kemado is a small label. When you
first started was it a good thing to be with an indie
label such as Kemado as opposed to a major?
Elefant: Kemado is the best label we could have possibly been on, because it
is not a big conglomeration. There were no barriers between us and the people
who run it, they are our friends and confidants. If somebody had a good idea
about marketing our music or anything, they would bring it up and most likely
it was put to use. Ultimately it is about freedom, artistically. It is a small
business of young Americans that will be declared an American-success-story.
(note: Elefant is now signed to Hollywood Records but Kemado is still
in the
mix)
FMFB: There was that particular video with models Petra and Lilliana and
there was a rumor an X-rated version of the video was shot. How hot and
steamy did it get?
Elefant: There is no X-rated version of the video, but that was a great
rumor. Everyone on the shoot was really professional, and it was all good clean fun.
FMFB: How long have you guys known each other as a band?
Elefant: We have known each other and been working together for some years.
FMFB: Were you and the band nervous about your first headlining tour?
Elefant: No, this is what we do. It is not true that bands get more nervous,
the bigger the place. I found that there is nothing more nerve-racking than
playing for a half empty club in New York where no one knows you, and no one
cares. But every band has to make it through that, so by the time you are
headlining, the nerves are never as bad as they were.
FMFB: You are all good looking guys and you said the first time you ever
saw your bands first music video, you were happy with how good the band
looked while rocking out. Do you think the more
successful you become, the groupie factor is going to get better? I mean,
going
from average to super model pussy.
Elefant: I don't really know, I am taken anyway. But we are pretty good
looking band.
FMFB: How old were you and what inspired you to pickup your instrument?
Elefant: I was 16, and it was definitely Jane's Addiction and their bass player
Eric Avery. All I ever wanted was to be a bass player. I am not one of those guys
who started on guitar and switched over. I learned bass first then learned
other instruments.
FMFB: If and when your band gets big enough to sell out Madison Square Garden
who will you like to open for you?
Elefant: Stellastarr
ELEFANT TAKE THE BLACK MAGIC SHOW ON THE ROAD
HEADLINING CLUB TOUR BEGINS MAY 3RD
(BURBANK, CA) - Hot off their sold-out tour with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club,
Hollywood/Kemado recording artists ELEFANT are returning to the road with a
headlining club tour that begins May 3rd at The Social in Orlando, Florida.
Opening for Elefant, from Orlando to Austin will be Austin, TX-based SOUND team
and Boston’s Aberdeen City. Picking up the support slot from San Diego to
Seattle will be Austin, TX quintet Voxtrot and Los Angeles’ Silversun Pickups.
The band will be touring in support of highly anticipated new album THE BLACK
MAGIC SHOW. The album, produced by Don Gilmore (Linkin Park, DuranDuran,
Dashboard Confessional), and mixed by Grammy Award winner Andy Wallace (Nirvana,
Jeff Buckley, Sonic Youth, Sheryl Crow).
ELEFANT, who recently wowed Austin crowds with two electrifying sets at SXSW,
have been drawing rave reviews. After a recent Windy City show, The Chicago
Tribune wrote, “…the difference in [ELEFANT’s] old and new material is as
apparent as the gap between middle school and college. Touching on its sparse,
tight and poppy repertoire from their 2003 debut Sunlight Makes Me Paranoid,
ELEFANT was darker and more daring than during its last visit to Chicago.” In a
pre-release review, the Denver Post called THE BLACK MAGIC SHOW “an intense album spanning temperatures from dance- |
|
floor-hot to creepy-ballad-cool.” The Worcester Telegram praised the band for keeping its “dreamy melodicism,” but also finding “the means to crank the volume and dig deeper into sonic weirdness.” THE BLACK MAGIC SHOW comes two years after the release of Elefant's critically acclaimed full-length debut, Sunlight Makes Me Paranoid. The New York-based
quartet (Argentine vocalist Diego Garcia, guitarist Mod, bassist Jeff James
and drummer Kevin McAdams) came together in 2001 and quickly made their mark
with a dark, seductive sound that enthralled critics and fans alike. Blender
gave 2003’s Sunlight Makes Me Paranoid four stars, saying “ELEFANT’s debut is so
strong, you may find yourself shouting its praises from the rooftop;” Rolling
Stone called it “a great album;” Nylon said it was “irresistibly catchy;”
Filter praised its“refreshing mix of pop cheeriness and rock backbone;” Guitar
Player wrote“ELEFANT prove that not only are they worthy of carrying the
musical torch first lit by stalwarts like Television and Talking Heads, but
furthering it as well;” and Spin applauded the disc for being “rich, smooth and
sounding like a night of New York heartbreak.”
