Barakka, the Philadelphia-based multi-ethnic group specializing in Turkish folk-rock music.
The group, led by Istanbul native Bariş Kaya, has been playing on the east coast for the last 4 years and has most recently played high-profile shows at Tin Angel, Painted Bride, University of Penn Museum, Turk's Head Festival, and Mehanata in New York.
Barakka plays Anadolu Rock, Turkish folk-rock music with a mix of eastern and western instrumentation, pioneered by artists like Bariş Manço and Erkin Koray. But their repertoire covers traditional Turkish music as well as unique original songs written by singer-guitarist Bariş Kaya. Instrumentation includes William Tayoun (keyboards), Joseph Tayoun (darbukka) and Roger Mgrdichian (oud) all veterans of the local middle east music scene, as well as Jim Hamilton on drums and Chris Marashlian on bass.
