Why we do it...
I know what I do, have a good idea how to do it, but it seems few really care about the "what" or the "how"- turns out the only thing that really counts is "WHY". In answering WHY I continue to perform, write, promote, and do all the myriad things to do with music, is to state what I believe.
I believe in the Art of the Song- and it has been my true love affair for most of my life, first in discovering at 6 yrs old how to create a thunderstorm on the piano leading to the learning, then in my shift away from the sciences (which I was naturally good at) to communication- working so much harder on learning to write.
At 13 yrs old, armed with a mini-compact organ, began jamming with other musicians- the "WHY" has never been clearer to me than then, the experience has left an indelible mark on my heart. And I became a sponge, anything to do with pop songs, including learning guitar, was my obsession, though if you asked me then I couldn't have told you WHY, it never came up!
Until a few years ago, only one answer came to mind, "I really love it", and part of my motivation to get back to it involved a fear- after all the years of honing this songwriting craft, so few would ever experience what I've been creating, or be inspired by it, unless I tried again.
Yes, the timing couldn't have been worse, my age, the yrs I wasn't in public raising family, even the crumbled music biz model...
Truly, Music didn't need me, but rather I needed Music. Over the years of not doing it out & about, I had fallen into a hopeless place which sent me to the lowest point ever, until I finally asked for help. And the answer was clear, "get back to who I am, or not survive."
So WHY is more like WHO for me, who I am. It makes me tick, it's what I think about, it excites me and befuddles me, but most important, I'm fully alive when I'm doing it, whether writing, recording, performing, or appreciating others' gifts of song.
One of my earliest songs states, "I think I'm addicted to music" but never has it been more true than NOW!
